Hand-carved Balinese abstract angel figurine displayed beneath a Christmas tree, Indonesia

An angel carved from solid wood in an elongated, abstract form: wings and robes suggested by smooth flowing planes rather than explicit features. The grain runs warm through the stained finish, visible where the wood opens at the wing edges. Made in Bali, where this style of abstract figurative carving has a long workshop tradition.

Sits well on a shelf, windowsill, or mantelpiece. Solid enough to hold its ground without taking up much space.

Each one is carved and stained by hand, so the tone and grain vary from piece to piece.

Carved in the villages of Gianyar

Carved in the villages of Gianyar

Most of our Balinese carving comes out of the villages around Ubud and Tegallalang, in the Gianyar regency. Not one workshop but a lot of small ones, each with its own speciality. One cuts plaques, another does animals, another paints. Our agent in Bali has been visiting the same people for over thirty years, and we see most of them ourselves on the annual buying trip.

The usual timber is albizia, pale and fast-growing, light in the hand for its size and close-grained enough to hold a smooth curve without tearing. Heavier pieces are cut from suar, the local rain tree, which is far denser and runs from cream sapwood through to a deep chocolate heart.

No two come out the same. Wood is not uniform and a hand-held chisel does not repeat itself, so grain, markings and tone shift from one piece to the next. Some pieces are roughed out on Java and finished on Bali; most are carved and finished in the same workshop.

Questions about this piece

Will mine look exactly like the one in the photos?
No, and that is deliberate. Each angel is carved and stained by hand, so the grain pattern and the depth of the stain vary from piece to piece. The shape and the size stay consistent to within a few millimetres.
Does it hang on the tree?
No, it stands on its own. It is a free-standing figure for a shelf, windowsill or mantelpiece, and it works well in a nativity grouping or as part of a table centrepiece.
How do I look after it?
Dust it with a dry cloth. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, since both will dry the wood out and fade the stain over time. No oil or polish needed.
Can I order several for a shop or a fair?
Yes. Timber Treasures supplies trade customers through Siesta Crafts wholesale. Have a look at our trade page or get in touch and we will sort out pricing.
