What are these wooden boxes made from?

These boxes come from Indonesia and India, carved from mango wood and other timbers. The Indonesian pieces carry relief carving across every face, cut with diamonds and flowers, then fitted with brass hardware. The Indian mango wood box features a Celtic Cross. Some boxes are left with natural wood finish; others are hand-painted, with hexagonal designs carrying bees or a cross, and lids inlaid with gold dragons or silver pentacles.

The range spans from a mini box designed to hold a single ring through to a jewellery chest on bracket feet. Two boxes, the Green Man and the Angel, are puzzle boxes built from interlocking sections that come apart in stages to reveal a hidden compartment. A playing card box and a long carved box sit between the smallest and largest pieces. Because each is carved and painted by hand, wood grain and painted details vary from box to box.
