What are bamboo root ducks?

Bamboo root ducks are carved from the dense, knotted base of the bamboo plant, the part normally discarded after shoots are harvested. Balinese carvers shape this distinctive material into standing ducks, each one taking its form from the root's natural contours. The grain runs tight and irregular, dark where the root twisted underground and paler higher up, so no two pieces are identical in shape or colouring.

The range spans from small ducklings to birds 45cm tall, some finished bare and sanded to show the wood, others hand-painted as named characters. You will find pirates on peg legs, punks in mohawks, beekeepers under veils, brides and grooms, Christmas figures from elves to reindeer, and seasonal sets dressed for the festive table. Some larger pieces come carved with detail such as lace-up boots.
