Collection: Woodland Animals

The fox, the hare, the hedgehog and the owl. Most of us met them on a page long before we met them in a hedgerow, in The Wind in the Willows, The Animals of Farthing Wood and The Gruffalo.

What woodland animals do you stock?

The collection centres on four creatures: owls, hares, foxes and hedgehogs, each carved or painted in different forms. Owls appear as smooth rain tree figurines from northern Thailand, a rustic set of three painted albizia pieces from Bali, carved into a bark-edged log section, and worked in deep relief into a stool seat. The hares follow an old British motif of the moon-gazer, sitting upright with its nose raised to the night sky, rendered as both a carved figure and a painted hanging sign. A sleeping fox curls into the seat of a rain tree stool. The hedgehog is miniature, its spines cut as a close diamond pattern, small enough to rest in a palm.

All pieces are carved in Bali or northern Thailand and finished by hand, so no two faces emerge quite the same. The timbers vary: rain tree from Thailand, albizia from Bali. Some are left natural, others painted. This variation is the signature of handwork, each animal individual in its expression and surface.
