What is wooden wall art?

Wooden wall art covers carved plaques, painted signs, and relief panels hung on twine or ready to mount. The collection runs from small discs of 13cm up to 40cm plaques. Some pieces are carved with imagery: forest scenes with trees and leaves, animal heads, geometric patterns like chakra mandalas and Celtic triskelions. Others are hand-painted with lettering, mushrooms in folk colours, or narrative scenes. A few sit outside the main types, such as peepal leaf paintings from India and a carved elephant head from northern Thailand with the trunk raised as a hook.

Most pieces are made in Bali from timber including albesia wood and raintree. Carving ranges from simple outline work to deep relief. Paint finishes vary from bright, graphic colour work on mushroom signs to fine detail on smaller pieces. Because each is finished by hand, grain, colour and depth of carving vary noticeably from one to the next, so no two are identical.
